It seems she's channelling Debussy today... and I love the expressive arm motions, too. I was initially trying to trim the video down, because I was worried that it might be longer than most viewers' attention span - but then figured who was I to try and limit her artistic expression?! I've always been terrible at sight reading, and have never even attempted improvisation. Yet, my nine year old gets it.

Improvisation from a third grader
Riley has been playing piano for years now. I often have to ask if she's actually practicing or if she's just playing around - although usually if it's something that sounds really impressive, she's just playing around. I LOVE THAT! She is usually so quiet and reserved, that I am utterly amazed at how expressive she can be when she is making up her own music. I'm usually doing something else while she's practicing, and don't capture it on my phone, but on this day I casually remarked "Hey - that sounds great! Could you play another one?" While I tried to record surreptitiously from the kitchen.

She actually has a recital in less than a week, and she's nowhere close to ready. I had to remind her to practice her assigned songs after she finished this, and she probably won't play in the recital. But I am not complaining!
